This Is Us

In the last season of NBC’s “This Is Us,” there was a lot of jumping back and forth between the past, present, and future for all of the characters, so a lot has happened. In anticipation of what is sure to be another tear-jerking season, here’s what you need to know about season 5.

Season 4 recap

Season 4 ended with a flash-forward, something that the fans of the show are very used to. So the family came together to spend time with Rebecca, who is suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. The flash-forward scene showed the viewers that Kevin and Uncle Nicky are both married and both are wearing wedding rings, but who are they married to?

Also, Kate’s best friend Maddison is pregnant with twins, and Kevin is the father but is Kevin married to Maddison, or is he married to somebody else?

Ahead of the premiere, Justin Hartley shared a clip of Kate and Toby finding out about Maddison’s pregnancy, and the reaction is all too relatable.

Post-pandemic production

The clip that Justin Hartley posted shows the characters are wearing face masks. They are social distancing, which means on season 5, the characters will tackle real-world issues, including the current COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Back in September, Sterling K. Brown spoke to People Magazine and gave a bit of detail about how the show will address the Black Lives Matter movement protests and social issues.

Brown’s character Randall is a Black man raised by a white family, giving the character a unique perspective of the movement and the specific prism through which he sees the world. Brown added that the writers of the show were able to capture it brilliantly.

At the end of season 4, Kate and Toby went back to the hospital where their son Jack was born in Season 4. The couple then started talking about having another child. Given the risks that Kate would have to take on with another pregnancy, the couple decided to adopt it.

The actress Chrissy Metz who plays Kate on the show confirmed on ET Canada that there would be a new member of the Pearson family.

Circling back to the season 4 finale flash-forward, viewers of the show noticed that Miguel was nowhere near Rebecca’s bedside; this got viewers asking what it means.

The actor who plays Miguel, Jon Huertas, spoke to ET Canada and gave a teaser what to expect with Miguel and Rebecca’s relationship. Huertas said they wanted to keep the audience waiting and did not want to tell people too much, but the showrunners will feature Miguel and Rebecca’s love story in season 5.

Mandy Moore also addressed questions about Rebecca and Miguel’s relationship, telling People Magazine that the show will feature an episode that will explain how the two characters came together.

Fans are guessing that most of the storytelling will happen in season 5, as season 6 of the series will be 18 episodes long and wrap up the whole series.
